I like making something out of nothing. Scraps of fabric, bits of rope, and broken jewelry are stitched together to create a sense of place far away, yet familiar. Everything is hand stitched to give my quilts that intimate feeling of folk art. Although I use some hand-dyed fabric, I prefer to use commercially printed cottons because they function as “found objects.” I enjoy the additional challenge of transforming commercial fabric into highly personal pieces. Much of my inspiration came from images of old Japan, where I lived and worked for ten years. I also enjoy depicting scenes of Maine. The combination of being born and raised in Indonesia, the years of living in Japan, and summers in Maine informs my choice of imagery and colors. The scraps from the art quilts are turned into mini costumes for the fashionable fairies, each with her own personality. These fairies are made out of twigs, cotton stuffing, beads, wire, and fabric scraps. They measure about 12-20 inches long.
